Top 5-a-Side Football Drills to Improve Your Game

Share on:

Whether you’re playing casually or competitively, 5-a-side football demands quick thinking, fast feet, and sharp passing. With smaller pitches and fewer players, every touch counts—and working on your skills off the pitch can make a big difference when match day arrives.

Here are five simple but highly effective drills you and your team can use to step up your 5-a-side game.

1

One-Touch Passing Squares

Purpose: Improve first touch, awareness, and short-range passing.

How it works:

Set up four cones in a square (around 5×5 metres). Players stand at each cone, with one player in the middle. The player in the centre receives and passes the ball to the next outside player using one touch, constantly adjusting their position as the ball moves around the square.

Why it helps in 5-a-side:

This drill mimics the quick passing and close control needed in tight spaces, perfect for fast-paced, small-sided matches.

2

Quick-Fire Finishing

Purpose: Improve reaction speed, composure, and finishing under pressure.

How it works:

A coach or teammate feeds balls rapidly to a player inside the box (or small marked area). The player has one or two touches to shoot before the next ball is played in.

Why it helps in 5-a-side:

Chances often come fast and without much space. This drill helps you stay sharp and composed when the ball breaks to you in the area.

3

1v1 Transition Drill

Purpose: Improve defending, attacking, and quick transitions.

How it works:

Set up a mini pitch with two small goals. Two players go head-to-head. As soon as one scores or the ball goes out, a new ball is fed in quickly. After a set number of goes, swap roles.

Why it helps in 5-a-side:

Small-sided football is all about transitions—this drill simulates the fast turnover between defence and attack you’ll face during matches.

4

Wall Pass Drill (Give and Go)

Purpose: Improve movement, timing, and short passing combinations.

How it works:

Set up cones in a triangle. The player passes to a teammate or wall, follows the pass, and receives a return ball into space. Add a defender for increased difficulty.

Why it helps in 5-a-side:

Quick one-twos and movement off the ball are key in creating chances. This drill sharpens both your passing and your timing.

5

Tight Space Rondo

Purpose: Improve close control, composure under pressure, and fast passing.

How it works:

Set up a small square with 3 or 4 players on the outside and 1 or 2 in the middle. Keep possession with one- or two-touch passing while the defenders try to win the ball.

Why it helps in 5-a-side:

This drill reflects real-game situations where you’re boxed in and need to pass your way out under pressure—an everyday scenario in 5-a-side.
